Part 6: What about fish?

The halacha on fish is identical to meat, and all aspects of animal suffering (tzaar baalei chayim) apply to fish as well. (שו”ת שאילת יעבץ ח”א יז. שו”ת משנה הלכות ח”ו רטז)

People may think fish do not feel pain but it has been proven they do. Fishing involves a great deal of animal suffering. Today, huge nets ninety kilometers long are dragged on the ocean floor collecting everything. The fish are under immense pressure, resulting in their eyes popping out and their organs exploding. They die a slow, painful death. Unwanted fish and other marine animals caught in these nets are thrown back to sea dead or injured. Two thirds of the animals captured are thrown back including dolphins and turtles. For every fish being eaten, two other animals are killed in vain.
